Spiced Cider for Fall

Perhaps what I love most about fall is its flavor. The flavor of the air, the food, the drinks.

Whenever I want my home to smell like fall, I’ll boil cinnamon sticks. If I’m feeling especially domestic, I’ll take it a step further and make apple cider. I was initially inspired by this recipe, and have since put my own spin on it. It’s easy to prepare, and even better to serve.  Spike the cider with rum if you’re having a party. Or, serve it sans alcohol with a side of graham crackers for the kiddos.

Ingredients: Organic Apple Juice (4 cups), Cinnamon Sticks (5), Whole Cloves (5), Whole Cardamom Pods (4), Fresh Ginger (1 piece), Lemon Zest (1 tbsp), Brown Sugar (1 tbsp), Orange Slices (4), Rum (optional, 3/4 cup)

Time: Prep- 10 mins//Cook- 30 mins//Serves- 4

Instructions: Combine apple juice and all ingredients except orange slices into a saucepan. Let it sit on low heat for 20 minutes and stir often. Add orange slices and let the cider sit on low heat for another 10 minutes. Once warm, use a strainer to separate the juice from the solid ingredients. Garnish each glass with an orange slice. Serve and sip.
