Pucker Up: Find The Best Red Lipstick
Pucker up, beauties! We’re talking red lips today.
Team Lauren’s Lyst did some very serious research. We tested drugstore-bought lipsticks in different shades of red. Why? Because after attempting to rock red lips like Gwen Stefani, I [frightfully] realized pulling it off is harder than it looks. It’s tough to apply evenly, and even tougher to take off.
A few tips… Apply balm prior to lipstick to avoid peeling and cracks. Use a subtle liner to help keep a bold red in place. Lean toward sipping drinks from a straw while also eating smaller bites [to keep your lipstick from becoming messy]. And pick a red that pairs well with your coloring — personally, I love deeper reds with my dark hair, and brighter reds on my light-haired friends!
1. Covergirl Colorlicious Lipstick in 305 Hot Chateur
Pros | This pick is moisturizing and easy to apply. The color doesn’t bleed outside your lip line, and it lasts for several hours! It’s bright + bold, which is good for making a statement.
Cons | The color was tough to get off! Post-shower, I still had remnants of red on and around my lips. Eventually, I used a makeup-remover wipe to clean it off.
2. L’Oreal Color Riche Lipstick in 315 True Red
Pros | This lipstick was another moisturizing favorite. It goes on smoothy, and feels soft on the lips. The color is bright, matte + long-lasting making it ideal for a special event.
Cons | We found this color started to bleed outside the lip line after applying it. It would be better paired with a subtle liner, to avoid looking uneven.
3. Maybelline Color Sensational Matte in 691 Rich Ruby Matte
Pros | This pick is a classic red! The lipstick is certainly more matte than the others, and has deeper undertones. It also lasts for several hours, and stays on through eating/drinking.
Cons | Since the lipstick is more matte, it can get dry after a few hours. Pair this with lip balm to avoid peeling. Apply this lipstick liberally to achieve the best look, and use a makeup-remover wipe later.
4. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in 520 Wine with Everything
Pros | You’ll notice this pick feels more like a natural gloss than a lipstick. It’s smooth, shimmery + lighter than the others — ideal for rocking red while still keeping your makeup more subtle. This lipstick has more a bit more pink + orange to it, and is easy to wash off at the end of the day.
Cons | The lightness of the lipstick means it won’t last for several hours the same way a matte red will.
