Hair How-To: Natural Waves
Waves, waves waves! I love styling my hair with natural waves year-round. Something about it feels effortless, approachable + youthful — qualities we all love!
Over the last several months, a lot of you asked for a wavy hair tutorial. Since both Katie and I usually opt for waves, we wanted to share our different approaches. Choosing what works for you all depends on your hair type!
LAUREN’S WAY | NO HEAT
1 | Shampoo + condition in the evening [favorite shampoo is Love by Davines]
2 | Brush throughly and towel dry for 5 minutes
3 | Apply Moroccan Intense Curl Cream (1-2 tbsp) to the bottom half of your hair. You can apply a very small amount to your baby hairs in front, to tame flyaways as well
4 | Wrap your hair in a very loose bun [no rubberband], or leave down and SLEEP on it
5 | The next day, run your hands through your waves. Apply texturizing spray to the bottom half of your hair to enhance the waves [favorite sprays are Oribe Beach Wave Spray and L’Oreal Texturizing Spray]
KATIE’S WAY | HEAT
1 | Start with dry hair. Using heat on wet hair will burn your hair! [My hair is naturally straight, but for this tutorial I blowdried it].
2 | Take two-thirds of your hair + secure it on top of your head with a clip.
3 | With a curling wand, start curling 1/2 inch pieces. Alternate between curling pieces away from your face + towards your face – don’t try to make it perfect!
4 | Once the bottom section is curled, take another third of your hair + repeat the same curling process, alternating the direction of the curls. Repeat with the last third. [TIP: Pieces closest to your face should be curled AWAY from the face so you don’t have hair in your eyes!]
5 | Run your fingers through your curls to mess them up + give them that beachy feel. You can also use a beach spray to play up the texture! [My favorite is this Kevin Murphy Texture Mist]
6 | Finish by flipping your head upside down, flipping back + spraying with hair spray! [I swear by this Dove Strength + Shine Hairspray]
